Medications

The truth about medications & BPD: there are no currently available medications that have been approved by the FDA for the specific treatment of borderline personality disorder. All the medications used to help people with BPD are used to treat portions of its symptoms. Anti-depressants for depression; mood stabilizers for anger; anti-psychotics for distorted thinking and racing thoughts.
Any medication should be used with caution and only at a dose that is clearly helpful. Recent studies suggest that taking the wrong kind of medications may induce a mood disorder in some people with BPD. For this reasons it is important to seek out a psychiatrist who is very experienced with BPD. Do not get your medication from your family doctor-they do not have adequate training or experience to help you.
Among medications that can be helpful are zyprexa, risperdal and seroquel (for thought disturbances and racing thoughts), clozaril (for cutting), Zoloft (for depression), Prosac (for depression). Medications such as depakote, neurotin and tegretol may help some people who experience strong shifting moods and emotions. You should avoid taking medications such as Valium, Ativan or Klonapin because of their high addiction potential. People with BPD are very addiction prone.
Remember, none of these medications will solve the problem. Their best use is to help you to work harder and more honestly in psychotherapy. For further medication information click here.
