Effects of Marijuana

Marijuana is the most widely used illegal drug in the Unites States.

Here is a list of the possible side effects from using marijuana:

Physical Effects:
  • Increases heart rate
  • THC dilates bronchial tubes & with frequent smoking a chronic cough may develop
  • Bloodshot eyes
  • THC is fat-soluble and can be harmful to tissues in the brain, lungs, and in the reproductive organs
  • Long-term use may lead to bronchitis, increased blood pressure, and a possible decrease in the immune system
  • Potential heart problems for those with current preexisting heart conditions
  • Dry mouth and throat may be present
  • Increases appetite

Mental / Emotional Effects:
  • There may be an altered sense of space or time
  • Reaction times will be slower
  • Impaired or reduced short-term memory
  • Confusion, anxiety, panic and paranoia may be present
  • Hallucinations may occur
  • Smoking may also worsen a prior mental health condition

Social Effects:
  • Amotivational Syndrome
    • Loss of interest in long-term goals and activities
    • Loss of production and desire to work consistently
    • Tired or fatigued
    • Low frustration threshold
    • Not really concerned with personal appearance
  • A person becomes less likely to meet daily challenges
  • Continued use dulls the mind
  • Interactions with friend and family may be affected

Long-Term Effects:
  • Increased risk of cancer
  • Decreased level of Testosterone in men
  • Increased level of Testosterone in women
  • Lower sperm count & difficulty having children
  • Increased risk of infertility
  • Psychological dependence
